Suomen Vahinkovakuutus Oy (SVV), founded in 2012, is a non-life insurance company built for the digital age. The company provides tailored insurance services under the POP Vakuutus brand.
From the outset, SVV has set out to challenge long-standing perceptions of the insurance industry as expensive and complex. Its approach is built around transparency, clear and understandable language, and an easy online purchasing experience without unnecessary insurance jargon.
Digitalisation extends beyond online services to telephone sales, customer service, and claims handling. The company’s operations are guided by jointly defined values: fairness, courage, and a results-driven mindset. These values are reflected in its approachable work culture, willingness to challenge industry conventions, and data-driven approach to setting goals.
Turning Regulatory Requirements into Practical Operating Models
“SVV was undertaking a major system development initiative, which highlighted the need to ensure that data protection and compliance requirements were systematically incorporated into the solutions. A key challenge was translating regulatory requirements into practical operating models and ensuring they could be implemented as an integral part of system development, rather than as a separate compliance layer. We decided to start working with Taskmill,” says Kimmo Leivo, Director of Insurance and Claims Services at SVV.
The joint project between SVV and Taskmill focused on defining, designing, and implementing data governance and data protection requirements as part of system development. The work included:
- Defining a Data Governance roadmap based on current-state and target-state analyses
- Implementing a domain model and data ownership model
- Defining data retention policies and initiating their implementation
In addition, key data governance processes were defined and enhanced, including:
- Data classification and handling rules
- Data quality management and metrics
- Data retention and deletion practices
- Incident and escalation procedures
- Ensuring audit readiness
Cross-Functional Collaboration Was Key to Success
The work was carried out as part of Taskmill’s broader delivery, led by Tom Lindmark in the role of Data Governance & Compliance Product Owner.
“A key part of the work was ensuring that the definitions did not remain merely as documentation, but were embedded into the new systems and everyday ways of working,” says Tom Lindmark.
This was achieved through close collaboration between business, IT, information security, and legal teams. In practice, the role provided by Taskmill served as a bridge between regulatory requirements and implementation:
- Requirements were translated into system-level control mechanisms
- Deletion logic and data dependencies were addressed across different areas of the solution
- Logging, auditing, and information security requirements were translated into concrete technical requirements
- Processes were integrated into day-to-day operations
The work also took into account SVV’s responsibilities as a data controller in managing and processing data.
Results and Benefits for Suomen Vahinkovakuutus
As a result, SVV successfully integrated data protection requirements into its day-to-day operations and established a clear direction for the continued development of Data Governance through a structured roadmap.
At the same time, key processes were defined and their implementation initiated, strengthening SVV’s readiness to respond to audits and regulatory requirements. The project also created a shared understanding across the organisation of roles, responsibilities, and operating models, providing a strong foundation for the long-term development of data governance.
“During the project, we ensured that the key areas of data protection and Data Governance were defined and incorporated into the overall solution, and that their implementation was initiated in a controlled manner. The work created a clear foundation for managing the data lifecycle and meeting compliance requirements as an integral part of our system development. We are extremely pleased with the outcome,” summarises Risto Pihlajasalo, Chief Technology Officer at SVV.
